WHICH MOWER IS BEST FOR ME?

WALK BEHIND/PETROL LAWNMOWERS

An ever-popular way of keeping your lawn neat and tidy, without worrying about restrictions on power cord length, petrol lawn mowers are an excellent choice for many homeowners and professional landscapers.

Petrol mowers are ideal for larger gardens. They are more powerful than mains electric models and aren’t restricted by a cable. They are typically highly manoeuvrable and give an excellent finish on all types of lawn. Modern petrol engines are easy to start. Some models have to be pushed to make them move forward, these are known as hand-propelled or push mowers; the engine is only used to drive the cutter blade. On power-driven or self-propelled lawnmower models, the engine also drives a transmission.

These mowers require less effort to use; just engage the drive lever and the mower will move forward.

TRACTOR MOWER

Tractor/Ride On Lawnmowers are the ideal choice for those who have a medium to large area of grass to cut and need more power than a standard walk-behind mower. Easy to navigate, you can choose between manual or hydrostatic, collection bag or mulching facility.

These mowers are also a great choice for landscapers, residential committees and sports clubs.

When purchasing a tractor mower, consider the size of garden, if you have any obstacles, for example trees, flower beds etc, and the type of terrain you have - is it rocky, hilly or flat?

Once you have established what you need, we'll be here to help you make the right choice for your garden.

FEATURES TO LOOK OUT FOR

Lawn mowers have lots of features and this can be confusing to people who aren’t aware of what to look out for. See below for a quick explanation of some key features when considering buying:

BLADES

Blades cut cleanly through the grass. The wider and stronger the blades, the more grass it can cut.

COLLECTORS

A fabric bag or plastic box that holds the grass clippings created while mowing your lawn. A larger grass collector saves repetitive trips to the compost heap.

CUTTING HEIGHT

This is simply the height above the ground that the lawnmower will cut the grass. A mower with several height cutting abilities allows you to cut the grass at different heights most suitable to lawn height at times of the year.

MULCHING

Re-cut the lawn clippings into smaller grass pieces and blows them back on to the lawn. This can be used to help fertilize your lawn. This can be an inbuilt feature or an additional add-on for several models.
